Straight answers to the questions that come up before a removal, written for homeowners rather than search engines. Where something depends on your town's rules, it says so instead of guessing.

How much does deck removal cost in Rochester?

There is no honest per-square-foot answer. The number comes from volume, access, what the deck sits on, and how the debris has to be separated. A low deck with a driveway beside it is a different job from a raised deck behind a fence with a twenty-foot carry.

Residential projects start at $1,000 because mobilisation and disposal cost more than that below a certain size. Above it, ask what is included: footings, hauling, tipping and cleanup should all be inside the number rather than added after.

Should you remove or repair an old deck?

Repair stops being the cheaper option when the rot is in the framing rather than the surface. Boards are replaceable; posts, ledges and joists that have been taking water for decades usually are not, and patching them buys a season or two.

The tell is movement underfoot and softness at the ledger where the deck meets the house. If both are present, a removal quote is worth having before spending on repairs.

What happens after a deck is removed?

The site needs its footings out first, then subgrade exposed where the next surface will sit. That is the part that makes the replacement cheaper — a contractor arriving to an actually clear site does not have to budget for demolition.

If a patio or new deck is going in, tell the removal contractor what is planned. Sequencing the two usually costs less than two separate mobilisations.

Signs an old shed should be removed

Look at the sills and the floor first, then the roof edge. If the sill plates have gone soft and the floor flexes near the door, the structure is holding itself together with paint.

A shed on skids can sometimes be relocated instead. One on a poured slab almost never can, and the slab has to be dealt with separately.

How concrete patio removal works

Concrete comes out by cutting, breaking and lifting. Reinforcement changes the work: mesh and rebar have to be cut and separated, which is why a reinforced slab prices differently from plain concrete.

Underneath is the second half of the job. Base depth varies wildly on older pours, and thin or missing base is usually why the slab failed in the first place.

Paver patio removal vs concrete patio removal

A paver patio comes apart by hand. Blocks lift, the bedding layer is scraped, and the base is either reused or removed. It is labour, and the material can often be salvaged.

Concrete is the opposite: heavy, monolithic and disposed of by weight. Treating them as the same job is how quotes go wrong.

Can outdoor structures be removed in a Rochester winter?

Removal is possible in winter more often than people expect — frozen ground actually carries a machine well. What stops work is snow cover hiding the footings, and access that has not been plowed.

What we avoid is anything that depends on pouring or curing concrete afterwards. That is a separate trade on a separate calendar.

Do you need a permit to remove a deck?

It depends on the town, and we are not going to guess at it. Some municipalities require a demolition permit for accessory structures; others do not. The answer changes at town lines across Monroe and Orleans County.

The check is a phone call to your town's code enforcement office, and it is usually the homeowner's to make. We will tell you what we know about your town, and we will not pretend to know what we do not.

Anything location-specific — permits, disposal rules — gets checked with the relevant office rather than published as assumption.
